Types of Sleep Disorders
Insomnia Prolonged ( a month or more) difficulty with falling or staying asleep.
Excessive daytime sleepiness Difficulty staying awake at appropriate or desirable times, such as at work, while driving, or during social functions.
Sleep apnea Condition in which a person stops breathing numerous times during sleep that may cause fatigue, sleepiness, irritability or sexual difficulties and may contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Loud snoring is usually a symptom of sleep apnea.
Narcolepsy A condition that usually starts in adolescence or young adulthood, causes the person to fall asleep suddenly.
Noctural myoclonus Strong kicking movement of the legs during sleep, causing brief, multiple periods of waking that can result in either insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness.
Restless leg syndrome Unpleasant sensation in the legs making it difficult to sleep.
Circadian rhythm disorder Malfunctioning of a persons internal clock that causes insomnia or sleepiness, usually linked to shift work or jet lag.
Sleep-related movements and behaviors Nightmares, sleepwalking, sleep talking and seizures.
