Developmental Delays - Sometimes a child may be lagging in developmental milestones. This happens in cases of mental retardation, Down syndrome and many other disorders. In therapy, the child is examined and the family is interviewed so that the appropriate program is planned and implemented to enhance development.

Whatever the delay or deficit area, the Barclay Rehabilitation team at Excela Health combines state-of-the-art equipment with a wide knowledge base in the three disciplines to assure the best treatment for one of our most valuable assets, our children. Newborns through adolescents will find help with a wide variety of physical difficulties and communication needs.

Pediatric treatment can be found at the Barclay Rehabilitation Centers in Youngwood, Medical Commons Two in Greensburg and Frick and Latrobe hospitals.

Physical Disorders - Musculoskeletal problems affect children as well as adults. Newborns may develop physical conditions such as torticollis, a twisting of the head to one side, or Erb's Palsy, caused by an injury to one or more nerves that control and supply the muscles of the shoulder and upper extremities.

These conditions can be addressed through exercise, stretches and at-home therapy. Orthopedic injuries can occur at any point in a child's development. The rehab team will individualize the appropriate exercise and functional activity program to help a child regain his or her independence.

Neurological Disorders - Many disorders fall under this category, and the combined efforts of physical and occupational therapists as well as speech and language pathologists at Excela Health make this the place to choose to help a child overcome obstacles. A child with a neurological deficit could be involved in a program that includes training in mobility and function, or an exercise program that caregivers can use at home.

Autism is another diagnosis that the therapist can address. Treatment for autism includes sensory integration, a technique that uses environmental stimulation to reestablish the connection between sight, sound and touch. This can involve:

swinging and balance training
various tactile sensations
visual training
auditory input
weighted clothing and proprioceptive training

These treatments help provide a sense of the body's position. This technique is utilized with communication and language training to maximize the results of therapy. Children with many other neurological problems will benefit from the same type of treatment to maximize their development as early in life as possible.
